| That is really silly, thinking that dogs are prohibited at flea markets. oh my, i am about to buy my poodle his costume and to bring her with me and my kid at a flea market to find the perfect fit. And when i learned it from this forum that it is prohibited i felt sorry for my quennie. I just hope it is not true and that i could walk my queenie in a flea market. |
| To me, Mamais' post is really funny...it caught my eye that there is more to just the name 'flea market.' Well, e bay used to be referred to as the 'world's largest flea market.' The myth regarding how e bay came to be revolves around it starting as a place to sell and buy collectible Pez dispensers. On the other hand, wouldn't walking in with your favorite pet in the name of a dog easily distract the ones that might be for sale inside a market? |
| I also wonder why flea markets are called flea markets. This or my question seems and sounds a little stupid but i feel it needs to be answered, so guys help me out, why is flea markets called flea markets? I am hoping for a good, kind answers and would want no offensive answers, if that is possible anyway. By the way, that was funny Mamais, i never thought of that till now. |
| I do not have any idea Dinky, but i think it is because as you can see at flea markets, there are lots of stuffs and goods, some are foods, and because the event or the market i mean is held outdoors, so you would expect flies and fleas.. So i think people make the market called flea market.. i think we should be thankful that atleast it is not called flies market.. hehe |
| Actually there a lot of speculations why such outdoor sale is a flea market. Some say that the people or the merchandise(cause most of it back then was already used or second hand goods) was then infected by fleas. Maybe one of the earliest concepts of the name was the Marché aux puces which literally means market with fleas in french. This was locate in Saint-Ouen, Seine-Saint-Denis, in the northern suburbs of Paris. |

They were called 'crocheteurs' or pickers. The romantic term was 'pêcheurs de lune' or fishermen for the moon. Many set up their temporary stalls within the Paris walls, in sleazy neighborhoods but because these neighborhoods were full of pickpockets and thieves, they were chased out of the city walls to Clignancourt, Montreuil, Vanves, etc. The largest of these flea markets is the one at Clignancourt but the other two continue to this day. |

| I am a flea market junkie, no doubt. Still, why is it that I have never heard of this one in particular, I have no clue. I mean, we can't possibly expect to know of every single one that is out there. That's why they have these type of forums anyway. |

| There maybe a lot of flea markets in the Caribbean, could even be more than the numbers there in US. But unlike of those in the US, I think they don't have regular web presence and websites. So you would just have idea's to these places by word of mouth or actually seeing one yourself. |

Feah, however, you would not need those websites if you knew a country very well, just the word of mouth could pass the news in a certain place including the schedules of flea markets, not to mention the ads on the street billboards and the ads on the television and the radios. | That is true Peter. Not only in the net that you can be able to have those kind of information. You can also be able to learn all of those by the people who are always there to give some fresh firsthand information, nothing beats the word of mouth spreading the place.
