Rivalry is seemering between farmers living near Chahungiola river over a move by the government to displace them in order to initiate hydroelectric power projects in the valleys near them. Majority of these farmers are poor and have lived there for years.

Despite being among the fastest growing economies in the region, Panama's reliance on foreign energy accounts for about two-thirds of the country's use. The move to put in place 90 projcts to produce power is set to ease the dependence on foreign energy. However, the farmers insist they are not budging at all
