If you are visiting a flea market outside the USA (and probably Canada) you also need to:1) prepare yourself for pickpockets (no passport or wallet in back pocket). 2) have a local go with you and prearrange a way for you to point out items for them to ask the price of. I found in Lima, Peru that prices were 5 to 1 for Gringo vs Native Spanish Speaker. (Who knows maybe it would have been even cheaper for Purevians).

Good tips. It would be terrible if somebody stole my passport or wallet while I was travelling in a foreign country! Talk about a complete nightmare!

A friend of mine has his passport and cell phone stolen at a market in Montevideo. A few weeks after he got his new passport he stopped by the police station and they had recovered his stolen passport! If you register with the U.S. Embassy (in person, not on the net) getting a new passport is a breeze (but will set you back a few bucks). If you don't register then you have to deal with proving your identity.

Those are some great tips. I guess I never realized pickpocketing would be prevelant outside of the U.S. I've been to some flea markets in Mexico in the past and never had a problem but now I'll have to be careful about that.

Thanks Art, i'll definitely keep that in mind for my next trip oversea :) I'm wondering though, is pocketpickers active in USA? I seem to never worry about that but i would think it does happen sometimes? I guess people just resort to purse snatching these days heh.

These are excellent tips. I like getting there early you get the best pick of items for sell. I have been to one or two later in the day and managed to get some items marked down because they just wanted to sell it. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
